They destroyed everything, including the modern infrastructure. When in reality, the Others came with no chance of peace. Or they march around the countryside in huge machines that look like mechanical spiders, ray guns blasting away, and always, always, humanity sets aside its differences and bands together to defeat the alien horde' (Yancey 1).

Cassie wishes they were the kind of aliens that, '.swoop down from the sky in their flying saucers to level New York, Tokyo, or London. They have doomed humanity and nearly killed everyone. The Others are terrifying aliens that seem to be capable of anything. She is a compassionate, understanding person, yet somehow also is logical and thinks like a survivor. Her first thought is survival, then maybe her emotions. Conversely, she also has the mindset of a warrior. Killer or not, she still has a soft spot. Whereas Cassie is showing signs that she feels terrible for doing this to the stranger. Killers are people with cold hearts and feel nothing when killing. For example, ''I have to see your other hand!' My voice cracked then. At some times she is almost soft and vulnerable. She underwent a major change due to the plot of the novel. This major change in character proves that she is dynamic. It's hard to imagine that she once was a girl crushing over a boy with a perfect smile, and now she is battling aliens and her best friend is a trusty rifle. She constantly battles physically and mentally against the Others. Although this journey turned her into a killer, it could also be interpreted as being a warrior. On top of that, she had to endure serious physical pain to do save him.

Her entire journey is made to find and rescue her little brother Sammy. Throughout the entire story, she never once gives into depression, loneliness, or hopelessness. Cassie is also extremely driven and strong.

She never wanted to be a cold-hearted killer but the unbelievable circumstances she was in made it understandable. She knows that she has changed and that it was the only way to survive. This change resulted in a person vs self conflict. As soon as the waves began, she slowly developed the need to survive in this bizarre reality. She went to school, and led a normal life. She used to be a sweet, innocent, Daddy's girl. In the early pages of the novel, Cassie says she changed. Being a survivor turned her into a killer. If survivors want to survive, they have to kill. That helps her in some ways, but also makes her person vs self conflicts worsen. That is the one word that I would use to describe her. Cassie Sullivan is the protagonist of The 5th Wave and proves again and again that she is a survivor.
